I have a question about the code check of a timber beam in XFrame2D 2023. Eurocode 5 distinguishes between the testing for pressure and bending loaded columns(6.3.2) and beams(6.3.3). When is this used for a column and for a beam?
XFEM4U, XFrame2D and XBeam2D provide both articles “6.3.2. MEMBERS SUBJECTED TO COMPRESSION AND BENDING (COLUMNS)” and “6.3.3. LATERAL TORSIONAL BUCKLING OF BEAMS”.
By examining whether there are tensile/compressive stresses in the extreme fibers, or only compressive stresses occur.
If there are only compressive stresses then only article 6.3.2 is used.
If there are tensile / compressive stresses then article 6.3.2 and article 6.3.3 are used.
This is a safe assumption. Ultimately, in my opinion, the beam should also be checked for buckling over both axes.
